The Importance of Veda Vidya
The Vedas are the foundation of Sanātana Dharma — an unbroken oral tradition spanning millennia, preserved through the sacred bond of Guru and Shishya.
ऋचो यजूंषि सामानि अथर्वाङ्गिरसां तथा।
एष वेदचतुष्टस्य धर्मो मूलं सनातनम्॥
Ṛco yajūṃṣi sāmāni atharvāṅgirasāṃ tathā | Eṣa vedacatuṣṭasya dharmo mūlaṃ sanātanam ||

How to read the tree
- Root — Brahman / Īśvara
- The Veda is apauruṣeya: no human author composed it. The Upaniṣad calls the four Vedas the very breath of the Supreme (Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 2.4.10).
- Water and nourishment — Śraddhā and Dharma
- Faith, and a life lived by the Veda, keep the tree alive. They pass from generation to generation through the guru–śiṣya paramparā, shown by the teacher and students at its foot.
- Trunk and four limbs — the Vedas
- One Veda, divided by Vedavyāsa into the Ṛg, Yajur, Sāma and Atharva Vedas: four equal limbs of a single trunk.
- Twigs — the śākhās
- Each Veda survives in recensions (śākhās), each preserved by its own lineage of reciters. The picture shows only some of them; more are listed below.
- Aerial roots — the six Vedāṅgas
- Like a banyan's prop roots, they grow from the tree and then hold it up. Śikṣā, Kalpa, Vyākaraṇa, Nirukta, Chandas and Jyotiṣa are the disciplines for reciting, performing and understanding the Veda. They serve all four Vedas, not only the limbs they hang beside.
- Fruit — Jñāna and Mokṣa
- The Veda guides a life of dharma in this world (abhyudaya) and, through knowledge of Brahman, leads to liberation (niḥśreyasa).
Inside one śākhā
Each śākhā is a complete body of texts, not just a Saṃhitā. The small twig at the centre of the tree shows the Taittirīya śākhā, growing from leaf to fruit:
- संहिताTaittirīya Saṃhitāthe mantras — leaves
- ब्राह्मणम्Taittirīya Brāhmaṇaexplains the rites — bud
- आरण्यकम्Taittirīya Āraṇyakameditations (upāsanā) — flower
- उपनिषत्Taittirīya & Mahānārāyaṇa Upaniṣadsknowledge of Brahman — fruit
Karma-kāṇḍaJñāna-kāṇḍa (Vedānta)
In the Kṛṣṇa Yajurveda, mantra and brāhmaṇa passages are interwoven even within the Saṃhitā, and the Upaniṣads sit inside the Āraṇyaka (prapāṭhakas 7–10). Other śākhās divide their texts differently.
And the aids each śākhā keeps
Alongside these four books, every śākhā keeps two aids of its own. They are Vedāṅgas: limbs that serve the Veda, not part of it. The Knowledge Map shows them in these same colours.
- Śikṣā: the PrātiśākhyaKeeps the recitation exact. It sets out how this śākhā’s saṃhitā is sounded (its letters, accents and sandhi, and how the word-by-word padapāṭha joins into continuous text), so the Veda passes from teacher to student unchanged. For the Taittirīyas: the Taittirīya Prātiśākhya.
- Kalpa: the Kalpa-sūtrasTurns the Veda into practice. Each school’s sūtras gather what the Brāhmaṇas teach into step-by-step procedure: Śrauta for the great sacrifices, Gṛhya for the household rites and saṃskāras, Dharma for conduct, and Śulba for building the altars. For the Taittirīyas: the sūtras of Āpastamba, Baudhāyana and other schools.
Śākhās not shown in the picture
Tradition remembers far more śākhās than survive today. Patañjali's Mahābhāṣya speaks of 21 for the Ṛgveda, 101 for the Yajurveda, 1,000 paths of the Sāmaveda and 9 for the Atharvaveda. Besides those in the picture, living traditions include:
- Śukla Yajurveda — Kāṇva, widely followed in Karnataka and Maharashtra
- Sāmaveda — Rāṇāyanīya, found mainly in Karnataka
- Kṛṣṇa Yajurveda — Maitrāyaṇī and Kaṭha, now rare

Adi Shankaracharya's timeless injunction: 'Let the Veda be studied daily.'
Inspired by the timeless injunction of Adi Shankaracharya — vedō nityam adhīyatām ('let the Veda be studied daily') — Veda Gurukulas stand as sacred institutions that preserve the very heartbeat of Sanātana Dharma. Rooted in the venerable Guru–Śiṣya Paramparā, they are not merely centres of learning, but sanctuaries where knowledge is lived, discipline is cultivated, and saṁskāra is imbibed through constant guidance and practice.
In an age of rapid change, they remain timeless beacons, ensuring that the wisdom of the Ṛṣis continues to illuminate generations with purity, authenticity, and unwavering continuity.
In humble alignment with this sacred ideal, Śrī Śivasaṅkalpa Vṛnda is devoted to supporting and strengthening Veda Gurukulas. Through dedicated efforts toward the welfare of Vedic students and Adhyāpakas, the Vṛnda seeks to contribute — however modestly — to the continuity of this timeless heritage, for the benefit of society and for loka kalyāṇa.

Arriving at the Gurukula
With a tin trunk, a plate of fruits and a heart full of wonder, a young boy arrives with his parents. He bows at the Ācārya’s feet — and a new family, the Guru–Śiṣya Paramparā, receives him.
तद्विद्धि प्रणिपातेन परिप्रश्नेन सेवया । उपदेक्ष्यन्ति ते ज्ञानं ज्ञानिनस्तत्त्वदर्शिनः ॥
Tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā | Upadekṣyanti te jñānaṃ jñāninas tattvadarśinaḥ ||

The name 'Sri Shivasankalpa' was bestowed as a blessing by His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Sannidhanam of the Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham, Sringeri. Sri Shivasankalpa Vṛnda operates with the boundless grace and divine blessings of His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahasannidhanam and His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Sannidhanam.
The Vṛnda considers the blessings and approval of the Sringeri Jagadgurus as paramount in all its endeavours.
